So you’re expecting your first baby and you’re completely clueless about the expense side of things or maybe you know things will get a bit more expensive but you’re not quite sure how or when – here are some tips to save money;
1. Amazon for nappies – you can sign up to become a Family member and get a discount but either way keep an eye on Pampers on Amazon, they do a monthly pack of around 200 nappies delivered to your door and if you add in a book or something else from below you qualify for super saver delivery once you spend more than £25.
2. If you see a “buy one get one free” offer on the LARGER bags of nappies, snap them up and stock up!
Nappies are a funny one in general, I only use Pampers so I can’t comment on the others (I have tried them but didn’t find them as good) but at the start the different types of pampers and quantities in the bags and boxes and sizes – it’s very confusing. Stick with number 1 and 2 in the newborn sizing and then when you hit size 3 it’s cheaper to switch to baby dry. I tried active fit when I hit size 4 but I found they leaked more so went back to baby dry. All babies are different though so try them. The key thing for me is to try and get a deal on the larger bags or on Amazon to keep the costs down, the cost per nappy for the carry bags works out much more expensive.
3. Stock up on water wipes and pampers sensitive 5 packs when on special offer before you have your baby, you’ll use the water wipes for the first few weeks then switch. By special offer I mean “Buy one get one free” or the five packs of Pampers sensitive for €6 ish. I think I bought my first pack of wipes when Ruby was about six months old.
4. Join Beady eye group on Facebook to keep track of bargains!
5. When you see Fairy washing powder, gel or liquitabs reduced buy in bulk. Again it was six months before I had to buy more because I had so many stock piled.
6. When weaning do batches of individual foods then thaw and mix then – what I mean by this is don’t blend together your carrot and sweet potato and freeze in mixed batches, what if your little pet takes a turn and won’t eat the carrot for you, you’ve a whole batch of food to dump. By freezing in individual portions you can just mix with something else.
7. Nappy bin liners on Amazon – these are SO expensive to buy in any shop in my experience, you will spend about £8 for a box of 3 refills on Amazon which is about a third of the regular price.
8. If by some miracle you find Sudocrem, Caldescene or Bepanthen on special offer anywhere – stock up!
9. Check out adverts.ie or donedeal.ie for your larger baby items – there are some great groups on Facebook as well where people sell their baby stuff or babymarket.ie is another great option
